THE IMPACT OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND LOCAL COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN SELONG BELANAK

Abstract


This study aims to examine the effect of sustainable tourism (X₁) and local community participation (X₂) on economic growth (Y) in the Selong Belanak tourism area, West Praya District, Central Lombok. A mixed-method approach was employed, with quantitative methods using multiple linear regression as the primary analysis, supported by qualitative data gathered through in-depth interviews. Data were collected from 100 respondents using a questionnaire consisting of 65 validated and reliable items.The results indicate that sustainable tourism and community participation simultaneously have a significant effect on economic growth (F = 19.921; sig. = 0.000). Partially, sustainable tourism has a significant positive effect (t = 2.968; sig. = 0.004) and community participation also has a significant positive effect (t = 2.692; sig. = 0.008) on economic growth. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.291) indicates that both variables explain 29.1% of the variation in community economic growth. Qualitative findings confirm that local communities actively participate in tourism management with economic circulation occurring within the local area. However, field observations reveal environmental concerns, including land encroachment and the conversion of mangrove areas that pose a flood risk a reality not yet fully reflected in respondents' perceptions.
